House of the Dragon: Are we still living in the golden age of television? This is difficult to tell. The first generation of Netflix’s more spectacular offerings – Top Boy and The Crown – ended last year. As did Succession and Happy Valley. And there is general agreement that the reputation has reached a certain peak in the last decade.
But there’s definitely a lot of television coming this year, and some familiar faces too. Anyone longing for the halcyon days of Westeros will be pleased to see the return of the Thrones spin-off, as well as a new series from the original show’s creators. Besides dragons, our list of the biggest TV shows of 2024 also features some lovable spies and high-flying soldiers.
True Detective is back, with Jodie Foster and Kali Rees taking the reins of the twisty crime series. This time, we’re in Alaska, so expect lots of polar landscapes and puffer jackets. Detectives Liz Dangers (Foster) and Evangeline Navarro (Reece) investigate the disappearance of six people from an Arctic research station. Early words say this is a return to form. And even if that doesn’t happen, an even more bleak scenario in January might make you grateful for the UK.
House of the Dragon season 2 cast: Who will be coming back?
Prince Luceris (Elliot Grihault) and his dragon Arax have been savagely eaten by Vaggar, so Rhaenyra’s boy will not be returning for season two. However, we are sure that the effects of his death will be massive.
Paddy Considine will also not be joining the cast for season two. Sadly, King Viserys has hung his crown on the Iron Throne, leaving his enemies’ children to bite each other to reclaim it.
Emma D’Arcy is set to reprise the role of the eponymous heiress Rhaenyra Targaryen, as she fights for her claim to the Iron Throne. There’s no doubt that Queen Alice will continue to block her path, which means the return of Olivia Cooke.
It’s green versus black, so the key figures will be back to rally around the king of their choice. Matt Smith’s Prince Daemon and Eve Best’s Princess Rhaenys will return to reinforce Rhaenyra’s defenses.
Rhys Ifans and Fabian Frankel will return as Otto Hightower and Ser Kristen Cole, respectively, in support of Aegon and Alicent.
House of the Dragon season 2: When’s it on?
House of the Dragon season two will debut on HBO/Max in June 2024. JB Perrette, head of global streaming and games for Warner Bros. Discovery, announced the release window during a Q&A at a media conference. However, the exact release date is still not revealed.
There’s no doubt that this news will be welcomed by fans who were previously led to believe that the second installment would arrive in August 2024.
The waiting period may be happily short but, unfortunately, so is the duration of the episodes.
Season two is only going to be eight episodes long, compared to the first season’s 10, but director Claire Kilner has promised they’ll be just as impressive.
There are eight amazing episodes with a lot happening in every episode, and sometimes we had trouble limiting them to an hour. Ryan’s decision was to give it a good beginning and a good ending, and they were “emotional and were full of “visually exciting events,” she said (via The Hollywood Reporter).
If you’re still a little disappointed by the lack of episodes, don’t worry. We have some news that will get you even more excited than Wager. Work has begun on the plots of seasons three and four.

So far, both Aliscent and Rhaenyra have attempted to forge a peaceful path through the chaos left by Viserys due to his deathbed words. However, Lucretias’ death will come as a shock to everyone, as Rhaenyra will likely demand immediate reward for her son’s death.
Given Aemond’s past actions, he is unlikely to believe that Lucreus’ death was an accident. If Aemond seeks an eye for an eye, Rhaenyra may seek a son for a son and make an attempt not only on the throne, but also on Aemond’s life.
